Preparing Your Home Before Baby Arrives
The goal is not a perfect nursery. It is removing friction so the first weeks feel gentler.
Most home preparation advice is about the nursery, which is the room a newborn will use least in the first months. The preparation that actually pays off is far less photogenic: putting the things you will need repeatedly within reach of the places you will actually be.
A few small choices now save your tired future self a great many steps. Think in stations rather than rooms.
Set up a station on every floor
Anywhere you will spend time, you should not have to go looking for the basics.
- Diapers, wipes, and a changing surface
- A water bottle and one-handed snacks
- A phone charger with a long cable
- Burp cloths and a spare change of clothes for the baby
- Comfortable pillows arranged where you will actually feed
- Soft lighting for night feeds that will not wake the room
- A small basket with pads, lip balm, and comfort items near the bed
Beyond supplies
- Emergency and provider numbers on the fridge where a visitor could find them
- A short list of jobs a visitor can do without asking you first
- Meals in the freezer, labelled with reheating instructions someone else can follow
- A decision, made in advance, about visitors in the first two weeks
- Your support team lined up: partner, family, doula, and who is coordinating them
- Pet and older-child arrangements for the first days home
Perfect is not the target.
Nothing on this list needs to be finished before birth, and no baby has ever noticed an unpainted nursery. Friction removal is the whole goal.
