Getting started

How to Choose a Postpartum Doula

The right doula is not the one with the longest list of services. It is the one who puts you at ease in the first few minutes.

Choosing someone to be in your home during one of the most tender seasons of your life is a real decision, and a polished website tells you very little about it. A few things matter considerably more.

Listen for clarity and warmth rather than pressure. A good doula will ask about your family before describing her services, answer honestly about scope, and make it genuinely easy to say no. If anything feels unclear or rushed, that itself is useful information.

Questions worth asking

  • What does a typical visit look like, start to finish?
  • What falls outside your scope, and what do you do when something does?
  • What training and certifications do you hold, and can I see them?
  • How do you handle it if our approach to feeding or sleep differs from yours?
  • What are your deposit, balance, and cancellation terms, in writing?
  • What happens if you are unwell or unavailable on a scheduled day?
  • How do we communicate between visits, and what is your response time?

What to look for

A clear, honest scope

Willingness to say "that is a question for your provider" is a strength, not a limitation.

A nonjudgmental presence

You should feel able to describe your real situation without editing it first.

A consultation-first approach

Any reputable doula will want to meet before you commit, and will not pressure you on the call.

Verifiable credentials

Certifications should be real, current, and shown to you without hesitation.

Fit is a legitimate reason to say no.

If a consultation leaves you unsure, that is an answer. A good doula would rather you find the right person than book the wrong one, and will say so.

You deserve support, too.

Let grace meet you at home.
