Building Your Postpartum Village in Southeast Wisconsin

It takes a village, but nobody explains how to assemble one. Here is how the pieces fit together.

"It takes a village" is repeated constantly and explained almost never. Most families arrive at the fourth trimester without one, then feel they have failed at something nobody taught them. Villages are not inherited any more. They are assembled deliberately, usually in advance.

A strong postpartum village blends several kinds of support, each with a clear role. Knowing which is which saves a great deal of time when something is hard at 11pm.

The pieces of a village

Clinical care

Your OB or midwife and your pediatrician. Anything medical starts here, always.

Feeding expertise

An IBCLC for clinical feeding problems, plus free peer support through La Leche League or WIC.

Mental health

A perinatal therapist, or Postpartum Support International’s free helpline and support groups as a starting point.

Day-to-day support

A postpartum doula: steady, non-medical, practical and emotional help in your home.

Your people

Family and friends, given specific jobs rather than a vague offer to help.

Community resources

Diaper banks, 211 Wisconsin, WIC, and local programs, all of which exist precisely for this.

Make the offers specific

"Let me know if you need anything" is almost impossible to answer while exhausted, because it hands the work of deciding back to the person with the least capacity to decide. The fix is to make requests concrete before you need them.

Keep a short list on the fridge: bring a meal and leave it at the door, take the dog out, run a load of laundry, hold the baby for an hour while I sleep, pick up diapers. Visitors want a job. Give them one.

If paid support is not possible right now.

A great deal of what follows is free. WIC, La Leche League, PSI, 211 Wisconsin, and local diaper banks all exist to be used, and using them is what they are for. A consultation with Rooted in Grace is also free, and can help you map out which resources fit your situation whether or not you ever book a visit.

You deserve support, too.

Let grace meet you at home.
